“I love borders. August is the border between summer and autumn; it is the most beautiful month I know. Twilight is the border between day and night, and the shore is the border between sea and land. The border is longing: when both have fallen in love but still haven’t said anything. The border is to be on the way. It is the way that is the most important thing.” — Tove Jansson.
That border. August heralds the end of summer for most of the planet. For the rest of us in the south, it is a month of a different kind of sweetness. While still cold, it carries the air of a promise of spring being on its way. I remember growing up, the afternoon sun would have a beautiful orange hue in my childhood home. I loved basking in the rays that brought the promise of spring and summer on its way. And the stars promise that this month starts with the Moon.

The New Moon in Leo on the 4th of August, takes part in a Yod with Pluto in Aquarius and Neptune in Pisces. We may find ourselves in a dream. We can’t tell whether it is a dream or an experience where we don’t know where it will lead us. The best thing we can do is focus on the focal point of the Yod, Venus. She is showing us that we need to get creative. To do what makes our hearts sing from the depths of our souls. To keep our life force alive and remind ourselves what that is for us.
Then Mercury goes retrograde from the 5th of August until the 28th of August. He will start in Virgo, go back into Leo on 16th August and then move into Virgo again. During this retrograde phase, it is as if the skies are inviting us to take time out and smell the roses. Reassess down to the minute details what is working for us and what isn’t. To take some time to enjoy ourselves. Test the waters of our conclusions and re-assess the results.
The Full Moon in Aquarius is an interesting one as it opposes Mercury and Vesta. We need to discover again what makes our hearts sing. Once we realise that, there may be people around us who will question it. The moon’s ruler on this day, Uranus is in Taurus and will make us question ourselves even more. Things might seem confusing, and weird. Eris and Chiron are conjunct in Aries and make a sextile to the Moon saying, toughen up, nicely. As the saying goes, everyone has an opinion but it isn’t always right. Do what new mothers learn to do, take it in and discard it. Keep only what will work for you and choose your battles. Only you know what is right for you.
On 23rd August, the Sun moves into Virgo, HAPPY BIRTHDAY VIRGOS!
A couple of days later, Vesta moves into Virgo. The sign she feels like herself. And the year ahead will make you feel like yourself again. A wonderful boost! As it is quincunx Pluto, don't be afraid. Take the reins and transform your life as guided.
And before the month ends, Ceres goes direct on the 26th. Mercury follows suit before the month ends with Venus moving into her home of Libra. August is panning out to be a month of boundaries. Boundaries we may learn to put up or take down.
By the end of the month, we will know how to nurture ourselves and be authentic. Self-care is more important than ever. No matter which hemisphere you are in on this wonderful planet of ours. For me, August is a wonderful month. My baby girl, Missy Leo, is turning 4! This coming year is the border between preschool and kindergarten. Where did the time go?
See you next month!
Astrological blessings,
